We're delighted to announce we're introducing 20 brand new bike friendly buses across our network meaning we're the first bus company in Scotland to have a fully bike-friendly bus route.

This £3,250,000 investment follows a trial earlier in the year of three brand new double decker ses operating between Peebles and Edinburgh. All vehicles were custom built with four on-board bike racks. Other features included leather seats and tables, wireless charging, audio and visual next stop announcements, smart seat backs and free WiFi. These X62 bike buses proved so popular that we retrofitted another double decker vehicle with bike racks and made the decision for all brand new vehicles to be fitted with bike racks.

We want to make bus a more attractive, greener transport option and our bike buses are key encouraging less car journeys, reducing congestion and creating a sustainable travel solution for first and last mile travel connections.

The new single deck Enviro 200 MMC vehicles, have been custom built by Falkirk bus builder Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) and each are equipped with two bike racks plus the same brilliant features as our trial vehicles.

The  buses will operate across three key routes, X95 Carlisle to Edinburgh via Hawick and Galashiels, X62 Galashiels to Edinburgh via Peebles and service 253 Berwick to Edinburgh via Dunbar and Haddington.

Ten new vehicles are currently in operation, with another 10 to be added to the network by the end of February 2020.

Service 253 has four new vehicles in operation making it Scotland’s first fully bike friendly bus service.

Michael Matheson, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity attended the launch of the new vehicles and said: “This is a welcome investment from Borders Buses and the West Coast Motors Group, supporting our ambition to build an active nation having recognised and responded to customer demand.

“This innovative step will encourage joined up and sustainable everyday journeys using both bikes and buses – improving our air quality and reducing congestion by creating new reasons to leave the car at home.”
